She was a reporter for The Washington Post nearly a decade, covering Grand Slam Tennis and Grand Slam Football, as well being a basketball reporter at numerous Olympics. Nichols, who earned two Emmy Awards during her nine-year time at ESPN and appeared on many of the network's most popular programs like NFL Countdown or SportsCenter, moved to ESPN after 2004. This is only the second nomination for the award for a female out of more than 200 contestants.
